The 10 Functional FCI Canine Groups

Unlike alphabetical registries, the FCI nomenclature groups dogs by original purpose and biological type: Group 1 (Sheepdogs and Cattledogs), Group 2 (Pinscher, Schnauzer, Molossoid, and Swiss Mountain Dogs), Group 3 (Terriers), Group 4 (Dachshunds), Group 5 (Spitz and Primitive Types), Group 6 (Scent Hounds), Group 7 (Pointing Dogs), Group 8 (Retrievers, Flushing and Water Dogs), Group 9 (Companion and Toy Dogs), and Group 10 (Sighthounds).

Each group is subdivided into sections by national origin and morphological subtype, ensuring judges and breeders evaluate working anatomy consistently across international CACIB exhibitions.

Definitive vs Provisional Breed Recognition

A breed admitted on a provisional basis holds an official FCI standard number and can compete in FCI international shows for national titles, but is not yet eligible for the CACIB (Certificat d'Aptitude au Championnat International de Beauté) until final General Assembly approval. Once granted definitive recognition, dogs of the breed are eligible for full CACIB competition and FCI International Champion titles.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the FCI issue individual dog pedigrees directly?

No. The FCI coordinates international standards and show regulations, while certified pedigrees and kennel prefixes are issued by the recognized national canine organization (such as VDH in Germany, SCC/LOF in France, RSCE in Spain, or CBKC in Brazil) in each member country.

What does the FCI standard date signify?

The standard date marks the publication or latest approved revision of the official breed standard PDF by the FCI Standards and Scientific Commissions.
